Michelle Vancura is a junior in Columbia College (CC ’19) majoring in Biochemistry. She works in the Kaufman Lab researching biopolymer gels that can be used in cell studies and tissue engineering applications. In her free time, she likes running, listening to music, and eating. She hopes to pursue a career in research.
Alex Maddon (CC ’21) is a freshman planning on studying Neuroscience. In high school, he interned at Science News Magazine and was able to both publish an article and assist in the production of an educational video. More recently, he did research within the Oncology and Angiogenesis department at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. Alex hopes to one day be a pediatric specialist, although he doesn’t know exactly what field he wants to pursue. Outside of his academics, Alex enjoys playing squash, practicing the piano, singing, and photography.
Coco Ruan (CC ’21) is a freshman planning on studying neuroscience and Medicine, Literature & Society. In high school, she worked in a bioproteomics lab and did research in traumatic brain disorder. Outside of academics, Coco loves watching and making documentaries, cooking, writing, and travelling. In the future, she hopes to work in the intersection of science and humanities.
Makena Binker Cosen (CC ‘21) is a freshman interested in studying public health, economics, bioinformatics, and cancer biology. Having grown up in Argentina, Canada, and Brookline, MA, she has made a number of educational videos that have won state, national, and international awards. In high school, she worked with her local public health department and amended tobacco regulation legislation and worked in a bioinformatics lab at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute studying differential markers of breast cancer subtypes. In her free time, Maky enjoys running, poetry, and listening to music with friends.
Janine Sempel (BC ‘20) is a sophomore at Barnard College majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior and minoring in history. She currently works in a research lab at the New York State Psychiatric Institute that focuses on substance abuse and the opioid epidemic. After graduating she hopes to pursue a career in medicine to one day become a surgeon. Aside from science, she enjoys running, watching romantic comedies and traveling.
Stephanie Zhu (SEAS ’20) is a sophomore studying Operations Research. She is currently doing research on sleep apnea treatments. She enjoys dancing ballet and producing video content for her YouTube channel in her free time. In the future, she hopes to go into healthcare operations.
