High Fructose Corn Syrup and Memory

The war on HFCS has begun!

In the first of what will likely be many studies on the mal-effects of this ubiquitous substance, scientists at the University of Georgia found that mice that were fed a diet of 60 percent fructose performed poorly on tests of spatial memory. (the task looks like this) Basically, the mouse has to swim around looking for a submerged platform to stand on(mice don’t like water!). The mice on fructose had much more trouble recalling the location of the platform 48 hours later.

While it’s true that no human is on a diet of 60 percent fructose, mice generally require a higher relative dose of a substance to show effects than humans do.
